The physical version of Tokaido had an elegance and beauty to the whole experience. I was surprised to see that not only did they maintain that experience, but they actually improved it. Tokaido in it's digital form is probably the most beautiful board game port I have ever seen. The visuals are outstanding and has lots of animation while you are on your journey. The layout of menus and options is simple and elegant. Everything is easy to see and you can zoom in when needed. You can access each traveler's information on how much money and panoramas they have. At the start of each game you will have the option between two travelers. While deciding, you can click on the bottom of the traveler for an explanation of his or her ability. The art and layout of the digital form of Tokaido is some of the best I have seen in digital ports and has taken the game to a new level.
The digital version plays exactly like the physical version. Travelers move by selecting a location and pressing on the available circle space on that location. Interacting with different locations had different pop up menus. The shop will show 3 items available to purchase and you will have to double touch the items you want. After you are done you will hit a check mark and then okay to leave. Monasteries will have you select up to 3 coins to put in a donation box. Once you select a coin, it is gone. There is no confirmation. Visiting panorama locations will paint part of your picture, which is very beautiful to watch the first few times. Early versions of the game had players freeze up at this location or unable to click okay to leave. As of patch 1.02, I have not experienced any games freezing up. Before the patches, my game would freeze 50% of the time. I asked Funforge about this and they stated that some old tablets may not be able to handle the game. The only other issue I had with the interface is when visiting the Inn. At the Inn you will be shown meals available to purchase that provide a lot victory points. You must double click the food before hitting okay. Several times I accidentally did not purchase food because I thought I had selected the food and hit okay. Only to find out that I said okay to not eating any food. This is only a very minor issue and it may only be myself that gets goofed up at the Inns occasionally. The recent patch also added an option for fast AI, significantly improving the game time of plays. Before the patch, you could watch an episode of your favorite show on TV and play your turn in between commercial breaks because AI turns took a long time. Funforge also shut down some online servers so that more people would be on the same server to play. Otherwise the gameplay and interface are very smooth and close to the physical version.
I prefer the digital version of Tokaido over the physical version. The beauty of the game takes it to a new level and is a masterpiece in terms of the art for the game. The patches that have been released so far have drastically improved the game for me. My games no longer crash and take less time to play. Online and Achievements need to be fixed in my opinion. I wish there was a way to add AI to multiplayer pass and play games to expand the player count and options. I have completed achievements but they do not show as completed. Also some of the achievements deal with posting on social media. I am not a fan of that concept and wish that achievements were about accomplishments in the game. The interface is very user friendly minus a few minor issues mentioned earlier that may just be me. Overall I would recommend this to anyone that enjoyed the physical version of the game or has not experienced Tokaido yet. This is a fun game that you can play while watching TV or doing stuff around the house. I am not the biggest fan of Tokaido, but if I had to choose the physical or digital version. I would choose the digital version by a landslide.
