Expands the DC Comics Deck-Building game series (core set is required to play)

Cryptozoic Entertainment brings us into the 31st century with their latest crossover expansion pack Legion of Super-Heroes. This pack contains 6 new Legion super heroes such as Lightning Lad, Saturn Girl, and Brainiac 5. Along with these super-heroes 14 new main deck cards are added and you will face 8 new super-villains from the future. Despite being from the future the Legion does tend to travel in time and end up in the current modern day DC universe. Time Travel is the new mechanic that the Legion adds to this very fun Deck-Building series. In this review we will discuss this new mechanic and how the crossover pack adds to the DC Deck-Building universe.

Time Travel
Time travel is the new keyword that used on cards in this crossover pack. Previous keywords have been used like "ongoing" or "attack". When a card in the line-up or super-villain stack has the words time travel you will be able to discard a card from your hand and play a card with that keyword from that card's current location. If you use a card that way you will not be able to buy or defeat that card this turn. The Legion super-heroes take this time travel ability past the boundary of the new cards and with their special abilities can temporarily give certain cards that time travel keyword. For example, Cosmic Boy allows you to give a card costing 5 or less in the line-up the keywords time travel for his turn if the first card you played during your turn is equipment. Next I will discuss how this new crossover pack works with the rest of the series.

 Playing with the crossover pack

As discussed earlier the new super-heroes and their abilities change how you may interact with cards in the line-up. You will quickly learn that time travel is an aggressive and fast paced mechanic. To feel the full effect of this crossover pack you will need to use the super-villains from it. Super-villains in this pack do not contain first appearance attacks, instead they all have the keyword time travel and you will be in control of when they attack the other players or gain their power. Beware that after the first super-villain is defeated the kid gloves come off and its lots of attacking from everyone. Buy defense cards fast as you can as they are greatly needed to counteract the attacks coming your way. The new cards that were added to the new deck have a theme of interacting with the line up, your discard pile or draw pile instead of just raw power. Playing with the crossover pack made game times faster than with just the core sets.

Final Thoughts
This is by far the best crossover pack put out by Cryptozoic for the DC Comics Deck-Building series. They took a minimal amount of cards and a new mechanic and made it feel like a new core set while using any of the previous core sets. I added the crossover pack with each of the super-hero core sets and found it blended well with each set. Each core set interacted with the crossover with slight differences. That is great for those who own all 3 core sets as this small expansion makes you feel almost like you have 3 new core sets. Games were a little faster with the new mechanic but all the cards felt balanced with the old core sets. Only issue is that you need to use the new super-villains to get the best out of the new heroes and time traveling. I wish they would have added a few more super-villains to add variety because right now you end up using all 8. I loved how the starter cards became useful later in the game as discards to use the time travel ability. This really feels like a new game rather than added flair that the previous crossover packs felt like. If you are a fan of the DC Comics Deck-Building series or want to breath some fresh air into the game, this crossover pack is a must buy.

Taco gives DC Comics DBG Crossover pack 3: Legion of Super-Heroes a rating of...
