Welcome to the Dungeon is a compact game with very few components. This is a great game to travel with due to it's size and small game footprint. The heroes and their equipment are thick cardboard tiles. The monsters in the dungeon are comprised of cards of standard quality. The instruction booklet explains the rules very well and are easy to comprehend. The art is very colorful and works well with the theme and tone of the game.
Welcome to the Dungeon is a bidding, push your luck type game. Each round a hero will be chosen to enter the dungeon. Heroes will be one of four classes. Warrior, Barbarian, Mage, and Rogue each have 8 pieces of equipment they hope to enter the dungeon with. If only it was that easy for our heroes, as we are pretty cutthroat and will not let them go in fully equipped
After a hero has been chosen and his equipment displayed, players one by one will choose to either draw a dungeon card or pass. Passing means that your are either very wise for not taking a chance or a wuss. Either way once you pass you are no longer in for that round and will not be sending the hero into the dungeon.
When a player draws a card they can do one of two things with that card. They can add the card face down to the dungeon pile. This pile will contain all the monsters that hero will be meeting in that dungeon. The other option is for the player to place the card face down in front of them and choose one piece of equipment to remove from the hero. The equipment and the card will not be used during this round.
Once all but one player have passed, that player will total up the hit points for the hero and include any hit points added from equipment. That player will reveal the dungeon cards from the dungeon pile one at a time. Monsters will display an equipment icon that can defeat them. If you have the item with that icon, the monster is defeated and put to the side. If you do not have that piece of equipment, the monster will then attack you for the number displayed on the card. You will lose hit points based off the attack numbers from all monsters in the dungeon. If after all cards are revealed and you have 1 or more hit points remaining, you have successfully completed the dungeon. You may taunt your opponents and take one success card. If you have no hit points remaining, be prepared to get laughed at and flip over your reference card to the red side. If the heroes you send in the dungeon fail twice, you are eliminated from the game and will not participate in future rounds. If you have 2 success cards or you are the only player not eliminated from the game, you win and proclaimed the dungeon master!
Welcome to the Dungeon packs a lot of fun in a small package. I found it to be super easy to teach and learn. The game takes very little table space and travels very easily. Games are usually finished in under 30 minutes including set up and tear down. This game provides bluffing, laughs, and lots of taunting. At times you will have to think hard on if you want to stay in or pass. If you like push your luck or poker bluffing, you will love Welcome to the Dungeon. This is staying in my collection and will work great as a filler or pub game. Welcome to the Dungeon is lots of fun for the whole family of dungeon crawlers.
