I have seen a lot of pictures from Gen Con this year and one point I want to state is that each stash people took home was different. Everyone had different games they wanted and were excited about. For all of us in the board game industry or in the hobby, this is awesome. More people are playing games and different games. Last year had some great releases, but I think it was outdone this year by SeaFall, Cry Havoc, Scythe, Star Trek Ascendancy, Terraforming Mars, and Blooborne. Another good point for this year's Gen Con was the incredible amount of events and the record attendance. There was always something for someone to do at Gen Con. Even on Wednesday you will find people at tables playing games or wanting to play games. If you have never experienced Gen Con, I highly recommend experiencing it as there is nothing like it.
This happens almost every year and that is running out of games right after opening. I hear that they could only air freight so many over because the game is still in production and not in their warehouse yet. I understand that excuse from newer companies, but some of these companies have been saying this year after year. I understand delays in production happen, but I would think that the goal would be to get it into your warehouse for Gen Con release. That is just my two cents on that and I could be missing details from behind the scenes. The other rough issue is space. If you are like me and do not do the best around huge crowds, the exhibit halls is maddening. No real solution to the issue, it is what it is sadly. If your going to stop and look at something, please do not stop in the middle of an intersection of isles. Okay I will stop with my rant.
Vendor booths that have nothing for sale. I am all for demoing a game you have coming out in the future, but I think you would do better with space in the event hall. There was one booth that I went to early and no one was there. I went back a little later and they informed me that they decided not to sell the game at Gen Con and are only doing demos.
While my time was brief at Gen Con this year, I enjoyed what I could. I saw and heard many great things from attendees and look forward to Gen Con 2017.
