Taco's Most Anticipated Games of 2017 List Part 1

1/25/2017

2017 is already here and all the companies are starting to show what they have coming for the year. 2015 and 2016 were extraordinary years for new games and looking at my list, I am scared to say that the flow of awesome new games will not stop. In fact I had to split the list into two parts due to all the great games. I mourn our wallets and bank accounts already for they are not ready. I am always excited to put out this list because I can look at during the year and see what games made their release and how many of them did I get to try. This year I decided to not have any specific ranking. These are just the games that I am most looking forward to for the year. To be on the list, the game must be a new retail release for 2017. I allowed games that have been reskinned and/or a new edition that greatly changes the gameplay. I hope you enjoy the list and I look forward to hearing what games you are excited for in 2017.

The Cool Mini or Not Section

Picture
 The Godfather: Corleone's Empire

Eric Lang has delivered on a favor to release a mafia themed worker placement game. Will this become a don to worker placement games or will it be sleeping with the fishes?

Picture
Arcadia Quest Inferno

I love Arcadia Quest and campaign PVP experience it brings. Inferno brings new quests, characters, and mechanics to a game that is at the top of my all time great games list. Will Inferno deliver a fiery passion into the game or will Hell freeze over?

Picture
 Rising Sun

Eric Lang puts his spin on Diplomacy with a Samurai twist. Early reports say that it is amazing to play. The miniatures look great. I see no reason why Rising Sun will fail to deliver the fatal blow to our bank accounts.

Picture
Rum and Bones: Second Tide

I got to play this at CMON Expo 2016 and the vast reworking of the whole game has improved it to a whole new level. I really enjoyed the original Rum and Bones, but it did have some issues with length and huge downtime. Second Tide has help fixed those and other issues fans wanted to see improved. If you like MOBA style games, Rum and Bones Second Tide is worth checking out. Yarrr!

The Next Batch of Legacy Games

Picture
 Charterstone

Jamey Stegmaier is the first to try and take on a legacy game without being co-designed by Rob Daviau. Charterstone is about building up your village how it improves over different plays. I am a huge fan of legacy style games and civilization/town building games, so this is a must on my list. Especially with my track record of enjoyment from Stonemaier Games. I have but one question, will there be a Taco Stand?

Picture
Chronicles 1: Origins

If you read my list last year, you may feel a sense of familiarity with this title.   Chronicles 1 was delayed, but the kickstarter is coming early this year and I hope for a late 2017 release. I really like the idea of the Echo system that pushes the legacy system to a series of games. This will be creating a civilization to the extreme.

Picture
 Pandemic Legacy Season 2

Who is surprised that they decided to do a second season of Pandemic Legacy? Season 1 was such a hit that a second seemed like a sure thing. I look forward to seeing what surprises Matt Leacock and Rob Daviau have in store for Season 2. Will this be the critical hit that Season one was or will we see a sophomore slump?

The New Editions and Reworks

Picture
Empires of the Void 2nd Edition

This was one of the first games done by Red Raven Games and had a lot of changes to the rules after release. I have heard that Empires of the Void 2nd Edition will feel very different from the original. I am a fan of science fiction themed games and love a good 4x space adventure. Will this be the edition you were hoping for?

Picture
 Thunderstone Quest

Thunderstone Quest is the third edition of the Thunderstone game line. Thunderstone and Thunderstone Advanced were two highly sought after deck-building games. Thunderstone Quest is promising to bring the feel and fun of Thunderstone with more co-op and quest like fun. Will this become the definitive version of Thunderstone? We will find out this year.

Picture
First Martians: Adventures on the Red Planet

Ignacy Trzewiczek takes his Robinson Curose story telling co-op  and transports us to Mars. First Martians will use an app to help guide you through the various stories on your missions on Mars. Will this be the best new co-op of the year? People who have had opportunities to play say it is amazing. I look forward to giving it a try.

I didn't even know about Origins, so thank you so much for that! I'll be tracking that one for sure! Rising Sun is on my wishlist since I knew about it. I would hope for a 2017 release but I haven't heard anything about it's kickstarter!

Glad you liked part 1 of the list David. I have been following Origins but have not had a chance to try it out yet. It really sounds like a great concept.
