Awesome Kingdom brings up into the dark Tower of Hateskull with art that is a mesh of heavy metal and Saturday morning cartoons. That blend of elements sums up the complete experience you will get from Awesome Kingdom. Cards have humorous names and art. The cards are very glossy and a little slick like they are already sleeved. Besides the cards the other components are all your standard cardboard variety. The box is very sturdy and should handle shelf wear well. Awesome Kingdom's rulebook is full of humor and colorful illustrations. The rulebook is easy to understand minus the movement section which with the combined illustration left me confused for a bit. Arrows pointing left mean to move your character clockwise while arrows pointing right move your character counter-clockwise. The different characters make comments in the rulebook and offer their insight. This adds to the light goofy fun that is supposed to be had with Awesome Kingdom.
Awesome Kingdom turns dungeon crawling into a light, fast card game. Players will each choose a random hero with their own skill. Heroes are based off classic fantasy character classes with added humor. For example the archer is Longtrudger and your cleric is Clergeon. (I think that might be the name of a Eevee evolution in the Pokemon games) Tower of Hateskull is comprised of dungeon tiles equal to the amount of players playing plus 7. Those will be laid out in a circle. Players will place their character standee in front of one the dungeon tiles each and the remaining seven spots will have a dungeon cards placed face up in front of them. Each player receives 3 action cards for day 1. After all action cards are played, the players will move on to day 2 and draw 3 new action cards. The game ends after 3 days have been completed and the person with most awesome points is declared the MOST AWESOME HERO (all caps means it is that awesome).
Awesome Kingdom is not a serious game. If you go in expecting deep strategy or planning many turns ahead your gonna have a bad time. This is one of those games you either enjoy for its goofy humor and light gameplay or dislike it because you want something with more meat to it. One person I played with commented how he felt he played each turn to its full potential and that it was impossible for him to win due to the dungeon cards drawn and randomness of where another player will go. If this sounds like something you would have an issue with then your gonna have a bad time. Otherwise I think you will enjoy Awesome Kingdom like I did. Awesome Kingdom is a fun game that you play with friends and family while you socialize, drink and recover from the stress of the day. Games lasting around 30 minutes means it fits in great between long games or when you have a short time to play. I did have some issues with Awesome Kingdom. While the majority of the rulebook is easy to understand, it took me awhile to get my mind around how the movement worked as the illustration was confusing. Also the lack of other dungeons and small variety of dungeon cards screams to me that expansions are planned and needed to extend this games life. Will you enjoy the game yes, but I can see it getting old after playing it a lot. Setting up this game was very easy as well as explaining how to play it. I think a wide age range will enjoy the humor and art. This game also has the best board game theme I have ever heard. Granted I have not heard many but this one is very memorable. In summary Awesome Kingdom is great for a game night where you want to laugh, have fun and relax.
