Nerdy Inventions is a compact game that can be taken anywhere to play. Nerdy Inventions does take some table space due to the center buying area and each player will have a growing collection of inventions to display. The game is comprised mostly of cards with art that is a mix of pop art and steampunk. The cards have a nice linen finish and are your standard size cards. The game also comes with 4 six sided dice that will be used on each player's turn. They are your standard plain white dice. The rule book is very detailed and each player has a reference card to understand all the icons. Each card has an icon representing an action, but also below that is a picture demonstrating the action as a refresher. All of this makes the game very easy to play and understand during your first play. The game cleans up very fast and plays around a half an hour.
Nerdy Inventions is a set collection game that uses dice to purchase new inventions. Each player will start with an invention based on their turn order and players 2-4 will also receive a tool card. The center of the table will have cog cards numbered 1-6 and below each card will be an invention card from the general stack.
During a player's turn they will start by rolling 3 dice. They can use those dice to buy new inventions, move cards in the center row, or reactivate a used invention. Each invention card displays what is required to purchase the card. For example a card may show a die showing 1 and 2 dice showing cogs. This means you need to have a die showing a 1 and 2 dice that display the value of the cog above the card. If the invention card was under the 4 cog, then you would need two 4s. You must match exactly, but you can use your inventions to help manipulate your dice to get the results you need. Some of the invention effects include subtracting a certain amount from a die or taking a die and splitting it into two dice that equal the sum of the original die. For example a 5 die into a 3 and 2. When you use an invention, you will exhaust the card and must spend a die equal to or higher than the card's invention level. Once refreshed it is able to be used again. The game can also end early if you have the blimp card and have 3 of the same value die. Otherwise the game ends when the invention deck runs out and everyone has had an equal number of turns. Once the game is over everyone counts up the number of points earned from inventions on the bottom left corner of their cards and also bonus points for how many different inventions they own. The player with the most victory points wins the game.
Nerdy Inventions is a very simple filler game to understand and play. Despite the simplicity of gameplay, I found it to be fun and enjoyed playing it with friends. The art is a little cheesy but works well with the tone of the game. While luck of the dice does play a role, the inventions do decrease the luck factor and adds a slight engine building element. The icons can seem daunting at first but they do everything possible to help you understand each symbol and what they exactly mean. The game plays decently fast for a filler game and takes up little space to take with you anywhere. Nerdy Inventions does take up some table space, but that can also be managed. This is a goofy, light game to play while having conversations with your group of friends. In that way the game is very successful. I would recommend it if you are looking for additional filler games that can be played with anyone. This will be added to my small game case of awesomeness that I take with me to cons and game nights.
